We know how frustrating it can be to locate someone who’s been arrested. Sometimes, searching for an inmate is easy and simple—other times, it can be seemingly impossible. Unfortunately, many websites on the internet show expired inmate lists or lists that aren’t credible enough to maintain an accurate database. So how do you find an inmate easily and without hassle?
Texas Department of Criminal Justice Inmate Database
Thankfully, searching for an inmate is easy and simple if you know how to do it. The internet has inmate databases available to anyone, if you know where to find them. Typically, the inmate database shows people currently in custody, but some websites allow you to search for past records as well. These inmate search databases allow you to find people who used to be in jail or custody, and have since been released.
Lucky for us, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has an inmate search system that allows you to search for any inmate—arrested anywhere in the entire state.
How to Find an Inmate Online
For starters, you must know the defendant’s name. In order to do a successful online inmate search, you will have to know a minimal amount of information. It’s good to at least know where the inmate was arrested, as far as state and county lines go.
If, however, you search through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmate search database and can’t find them, it is possible they were detained in a federal facility or at a jail not included in the state database.

Information You Need to Know
First and foremost, you will need to know the name of the inmate. If their name has changed, search using the name they had when arrested. While some states allow you to search using an alias or partial name, the state of Texas requires a full first and last name to find an inmate online.
If the inmate you’re looking for has a particularly common name, don’t be surprised if you get a high number of results for the same name. In this case, you will need to know additional information on the inmate, such as their date of birth or documented race.

If you can’t find who you’re searching for, try inputting less information. For instance, if you’re looking for an inmate named Mary Jane Parker and don’t get results, try to search again but with less specific information. Instead, try just searching for Mary Parker. Feel free to redo your search until you find who you’re looking for. If nothing works, try just using their first name and last initial, or vice versa.
